Primary care in Laveen, for adults and children
Family medicine covers a lot of ground. This is what I look after at Optima Medical in Laveen, and the procedures I can do in the clinic rather than sending you elsewhere.
Annual physicals and preventive care
A yearly visit is the cheapest medicine there is. We go through your history, run the screenings that are due for your age and risk, check your vaccinations are current, and then actually sit and talk through what the numbers mean rather than emailing you a result and leaving you to guess.
- Wellness and annual exams
- Age-appropriate screening
- Vaccinations and boosters
- Bloodwork with a proper explanation
- Pre-surgical clearance
Chronic disease management
Diabetes, blood pressure, thyroid and cholesterol are not solved in one visit. They are managed, steadily, by someone who remembers what we tried last time and why. That is where continuity with one provider stops being a nice idea and starts being the whole point.
- Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Thyroid conditions
- Medication reviews and adjustments
Women’s health
Routine gynaecologic care in a primary care setting, so it is one appointment with someone you already know rather than a referral to a stranger. I trained in women’s health and obstetrics at the Rocky Mountain Women’s Center and place both Nexplanon and IUDs.
- Pap smears and cervical screening
- Contraception counselling
- Nexplanon placement and removal
- IUD placement
- Menstrual and menopausal concerns
Procedures done here, not referred
A lot of what gets referred out can be done in the room. That is one appointment instead of three, and no waiting weeks for something minor.
- Skin biopsies
- Incision and drainage
- Wound closure and staple removal
- Joint injections
- Nexplanon and IUD procedures
Acute and same-week problems
Infections, injuries, rashes, the cough that will not clear. Things that need looking at this week, not next month. Same day and next day appointments are often available.
- Infections and illness
- Minor injuries
- Skin complaints
- Urinary and respiratory problems
- Same or next day availability
Children and families
I trained in paediatrics at the University of Utah’s South Main Public Health Center, so families can be looked after in one place rather than split across practices.
- Well child checks
- Developmental milestones
- Childhood vaccinations
- Everyday paediatric illness
Not sure whether something is worth an appointment? Book one anyway. Working out whether a symptom matters is part of the job, and it is a much better use of a visit than waiting to see whether it gets worse.
What I am not the right person for
Being straight about this saves you a wasted visit. Anything needing a specialist procedure, inpatient care, or emergency treatment belongs elsewhere, and I will say so and help you get there rather than stretch the visit. If you are having chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of a stroke or a serious injury, call 911 or go to an emergency department.
